Day One Cali Roots 2017 | Top Shelf Reggae

The 8th Annual California Roots Music and Arts Festival was finally here! 2017 got good vibes going the minute the gates opened with high-energy, prime performances by SYNRGY, Skanks Roots Project, and Passafire. By midday, the Monterey fairgrounds was packed to capacity with vibrant reggae lovers who had traveled near and far to enjoy Day One. And, between the three musical stages, every set seemed better than the last. To say who put on the best act Day One is close to impossible, for all were solid, yet stircrazy… mixing reggae with spoken word with hip hop with folk with EDM and good ol' rock-n-roll. Besides the aforementioned openers, scheduled acts included Zach Deputy, The Lates Ones, Common Kings, Beebs, Matisyahu, Stick Figure, Matt Masih and his Summer of Love Tribute Band, Jesse Royal, and (of course) the two Cali Roots veteran headliners, SOJA and Rebelution. Stay tuned for more California Roots 2017 highlights in the Day Two and Day Three galleries, band interview videos, and enjoy a full summary of the weekend in the 8th Annual Cali Roots recap article.
